NASHVILLE, TN – January 14,
2025 – Ralph Stanley
II, backed by the newest edition of the fabled Clinch
Mountain Boys, will be featured on the Grand
Ole Opry Friday, January 17, at the Ryman
Auditorium to memorialize his late father’s distinction
as the first act inducted into the Opry in the 21st Century. Dr. Ralph
Stanley, as he was professionally known, became the Opry’s newest
member on Jan. 15, 2000.
“I've had the honor of playing the Grand Ole Opry many times as a
member of my dad's band,” says the younger Stanley, “and each
performance has felt special, but fronting the Clinch Mountain Boys at
the Ryman on the 25th anniversary of Dad's induction—and during
the 100th year of the Opry itself—is an indescribable thrill.”
|
In
welcoming the elder Stanley to the stage for his official induction,
host Porter Wagoner asserted, “I've got to tell
you—there's nobody in
this business I respect any more than this man. He's such a
legend.” Stanley then drew spontaneous cheers from the audience with a
hard-driving medley of two of his many standards. “Man of Constant
Sorrow” and “Little Maggie.” After that, Opry member and Stanley
enthusiast Patty Loveless joined him for an impassioned
rendering of the ancient murder ballad, “Pretty Polly.”
|
Apart
from marking his ascension to the Opry, the year 2000 also saw Stanley
spotlighted in the Coen Brothers' now classic film, “O Brother, Where
Art
Thou,” and in the D.A. Pennebaker/Chris Hegedus/Nick Doob documentary,
“Down From the Mountain.” In 2002, Stanley won the Grammy for Best
Male Country Vocal Performance for his recording of “O
Death” from the “O Brother” soundtrack.
With Ralph II as his lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Stanley would
continue to play the Opry until his death in 2016.
Also on the January 17 bill are Suzy Boggus, Gary Mule, Jeannie Seely,
Lanco, Restless Road and John
Conlee.
